Natural Attractions - Wildlife and National Parks

National parks about where you can take in the fantastic scenery and wildlife of the region. Boodjamulla (Lawn Hill) National Park is one of Queensland's most renowned and scenic national parks, featuring geographical features such as gorges and sandstone mountain ranges, along with an area of unsupassed natural history value, Riversleigh.

Visit the amazing Undara Volcanic National Park which is one of Australia's greatest geological wonders. The Daintree rainforest is spectacular and unique in that it is one of the few places in the world where the rainforest meets the beach. Wildlife reserves and zoos are abundant, including the award-winning Kuranda Koala Gardens, Mareeba Tropical Savanna & Wetland Reserve, Hartley's Creek Crocodile Farm and Cairns Tropical Zoo.

The Great Barrier Reef

The Great Barrier Reef is the world's biggest and most extensive reef system, stretching more than 2000km along Queensland's north-east coast. The reef features hundreds of continental islands, reef islands and cays, small bare sand cays, and permanent vegetated cays, as well as thousands of individual coral reefs.

Exploring the Great Barrier Reef is easy as there are many companies offering tours and Great Barrier Reef experiences. You can snorkel or scuba dive with equipment provided and a trained crew on hand to assist, or view the underwater beauty of the reef from the comfort of a semi-submersible or underwater observatory.Take a scenic flight in a plane or helicopter. There is easy access to the outer reef and islands from points all along the coast, to suit your style or budget.

Adventure Tours

For the adventurous, there are many tours and attractions in Tropical North Queensland designed to thrill and excite. Choose from hot air balloon rides to take in the sweeping scenery and dramatic landscape, or go bungy jumping in the rainforest. Go horseriding or catch an ATV (all terrain vehicle) or quad bike to see aspects of the rainforest flora and fauna that you might not normally have the opportunity to see on conventional tours. Tandem skydiving is available in Cairns, which allows you to fall through the crystal clear skies of Tropical North Queensland in safety and security.

Dining and Entertainment

The Great Barrier Reef region is blessed with an abundance of local delicacies: fresh seafood from the oceans and rivers, tempting exotic tropical fruits from the Tropical Tablelands, and the piquant flavours of native australian cuisine.
There are many world class restaurants in Cairns City and its surrounding regions, and they reflect the cosmopolitan nature of both its residents and visitors, with nearly all making a special point of presenting their own variation of Tropical specialities such as succulent prawns, delicate barramundi, mud crabs, reef species like the famed coral trout and red emperor, along with the subtle indigenous flavours of kangaroo, emu and crocodile.  Be adventurous and you'll be rewarded by the very special experience that is 'a taste of the tropics'!

Shopping

Until a few years ago the locals headed south to indulge in serious spending, however today people are attracted to our region for its outstanding shopping attractions.  Spend some time browsing through international boutiques, national department stores and leisure retail centres and exploring the many arcades, galleries and plazas.
You'll find everything from international 'name' boutiques and authentic souvenirs in the heart of Cairns' central business district to interesting markets and bazaars in regional towns.  International duty free stores offer fabulous merchandise, and art galleries are stocked with quality artworks from local and national artists.
